Tutor Responsibilities
You are a part time employee of the Seattle Community College District and part of your professional duty is to insure confidentiality and trust.

  • Your tutee should be able to speak frankly about academic difficulties without fear that you will repeat what is being said.
  • Always ask your tutee if you feel you need to share information from the tutor session with a higher authority.
  • Do not comment on instructor's methods or teaching style. Learn to be tactful when questioning the student about the classroom environment.
  • You will be asked to work with a diverse group of people many of whom will be different from yourself. They may have a disability or be a different race or religion. Some will not be as intelligent as you and some may have had more opportunities than you. Be aware that differences can cause subtle effects on the tutoring session. Here are some helpful reminders:
    • Consciously refrain from stereotyping or generalizing groups of people
    • Find commonalities
    • Emphasize your similarities instead of your differences
    • Respect the right of others to have opinions that are different from your own
    • Be as open minded as you can
    • Be patient and remember that you know the subject matter - the tutee doesn't
  • Until your schedule is firmly established, check back with the tutor center coordinator daily.
  • Maintain up-to-date contact sheets!! Be sure signatures are clear and readable showing first and last name of tutee. Turn your contact sheets in to the office on the date due. Failing to turn in your contact sheet may result in a two week delay of your paycheck.
  • Check your e-mail regularly. The office staff prefers to use e-mail to contact tutors with names of new tutees.
