Establishing the Right Environment
Appropriate Places for the Tutor Session

Tutoring occurs in a variety of places on campus. Be sure to choose a place that is free from distractions and noise. The tutor center is a logical place due to the proximity of staff and supplies. Tables are available in MAST (RSB 18) and in RSB 16 during the afternoons. Three conference rooms are available in the library and there are several tables on the second floor of the library that are ideal for your tutor sessions. You may also use a classroom that is unlocked and not in use. Tutor Center staff can assist you in finding a tutoring location.

Be sure to select a location with enough room to spread out books, notes, and any other supplies you need. Find a space where you can sit side-by-side with your tutee. This will make it easier to share materials and it encourages interaction.

Do not tutor in cars, private homes, restaurants, or out-of-the-way locations. ALL TUTORING IS DONE ON CAMPUS!

What should I Wear ?

You are not the instructor so you don't have to dress like one. Revealing, tight, flamboyant clothing may get you more attention but will detract from your credibility. Tutors are college employees and, as such, should dress a little better than the average student. Clean, casual attire is acceptable and will add value to your tutoring experience.

Personal Hygiene

Smells are distracting. Too much perfume, aftershave, cologne or body odor will turn-off your tutee. Keep in mind that you will be working closely with another person and of your breath - coffee and smoking - could cause offense.

Food and Drinks

Food and drink is not allowed in the library, classrooms and areas where computers are located. However, hunger can bring the learning process to a complete halt. It's perfectly OK to move your tutor session to the cafeteria or student union building to allow your tutee to get a nutritious snack. As a general rule, tutors should build their eating times into their daily schedule so that they don't have to eat at the tutor session.
