Software Engineering
South Seattle Community College will place our Software Engineering program on inactive status, effective spring 2008.
This recommendation is made in response to a program viability analysis, conducted by Synergy Consulting in December 2007, which highlighted declining student enrollment, as well as lack of industry demand. Jobs are being outsourced and most jobs will soon require a bachelor’s degree. The review panel of professionals agreed that the low demand for graduates makes the program no longer viable. Enrollment has dipped to eight students.
The Technical Advisory Committee recommended on May 17, 2007, that the program be temporarily closed (placed on inactive status). No full-time faculty will be impacted, as the full-time faculty recently resigned to return to industry.
We are no longer accepting new students into the program. However, we will work with all current students to ensure that they are able to complete their program of study. In addition, we are exploring new programs recommended by the industry panel in: Global Project Management in IT, Software Testing Specialist, and Security Specialist in Information Technology. We believe that these will better prepare our students for careers in IT, both now and into the future.
