Transportation, Logistics and Supply Chain Management Short term Training Certificate and Course Descriptions

The Following five courses: LOG 235, LOG 236, LOG 237, LOG 238, and LOG 239 make up the Transportation, Logistics and Supply Chain Management Program. This is 19 Credit Short Term Training program is designed for working adults who are interested in the logistics industry. Initially classes will be offered at night with an on-line component. The internship class is not required to complete the program.   
 

LOG 235 Introduction to Transportation and Logistics
3 Credits, 33 clock hours - See Class Schedule for times.
This course surveys the organization and operations of the commercial transportation industry and its impact on the bottom-line of today’s modern businesses.  Course topics will include; the legal and regulatory environment, costing and pricing, major transportation modes, security issues, managing transportation partnerships and the use of information and technology in the logistics sector.

LOG 236 Introduction to Airport and Seaport Operations
4 Credits, 44 Clock Hours
This course provides the student with an introduction to the structure, organization and operation of a modern airport and seaport, including current issues and challenges. The class will also examine the critical interface with private sector providers of agency, terminal, stevedoring, tug, and line handling services. The significant roles of customhouse brokers, freight forwarders and cargo consolidators will be examined, as will the extent and effects of government regulatory agencies.

LOG 237 Supply Chain Management
4 Credits, 44 Clock Hours
This course will introduce students to the global supply chain with an emphasis on supply sources, distribution, production planning, information systems, customer service, inventory management, warehouse management, supply chain relationships and challenges facing managers today.  Students completing the course will understand supply chain management systems and relationships, and will be able to integrate information regarding the flow of materials across the supply chain.

LOG 238 Domestic and International Freight Operations
4 Credits, 44 Clock Hours
This course examines current and enduring issues in the areas of freight operations, air and surface modes, inbound and outbound logistics, and private and public policies. While not ignoring traditional problems and solutions, the course will focus on critical issues facing transportation companies in today's environment, one with heightened expectations on all sides: customers want reliable service and reasonable prices; employees and regulators want greater safety and security; citizens want access to services and responsible care of the environment without tax increases; and shareholders want at least market returns or their investments.

Log 239 Transportation and Border Security
4 Credits, 44 Clock Hours
This course will provide an in-depth view of modern border and transportation security, including the protection of seaports, ships, aircraft, trains, trucks, pipelines, etc.  The course will cover specific facets of transportation security, including physical and procedural controls, and regulations of the Department of Homeland Security, the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Coast Guard and others. It will also discuss current threats, counter terrorism measures, new technologies, and the importance of both passenger and cargo security to the global economy.

LOG 197 Transportation/Logistics/Cargo Handling Internship (Not Required)
1 - 5 Credits
This semester-long internship is designed to provide the student with significant experience in the areas of transportation, logistics management or cargo handling and security. The internship will provide the student with an opportunity to apply their educational knowledge to logistical issues confronted by cooperating firms.
