Overview

The Landscape Horticulture Program at South Seattle College offers a one-year certificate, an Associate of Applied Science degree and training toward a number of professional certificates.

The program is housed on the edge of the South Seattle College Arboretum, a 6-acre outdoor classroom and laboratory. Facilities include classrooms, a greenhouse nursery production facility, cold frames, a shade house and the Retail Garden Center. The program offers students an opportunity to increase their plant knowledge while gaining retail experience.

Student projects have included the construction of large cold frames, the design of new gardens, the installation of gardens, the construction of hardscape features and irrigation systems and garden renovations.

Landscape Horticulture careers combine art and science, providing a balance between physical and intellectual work. Learn immediate job skills through classes that combine lecture, hands-on application, field trips and projects. Guest speakers are regularly invited to share their knowledge and expertise of the industry. Students are required to complete an industry internships. There is also an annual hiring event featuring both small firms, large scale corporations, and government sectors.

The majority of LHO courses meet once day a week; some evening courses are available. Students have the flexibility to attend full-time, part-time or one class at a time. Students will be able to complete a degree within two years if you enrolled as a full-time student and make satisfactory progress.
