Healthcare Pathway

What it is & How it Works

The Healthcare Pathway is designed to help non-native English speakers and other students who need support in moving forward to enrolling in college level courses and to assist students in successfully completing the academic courses that are required in many Health Science Careers.  The pathway is designed to create a cohort in which  students take and complete various pre-requisite academic courses together.  Students participating in the pathway model will have easy access to tutoring and support in order to assist in the successful completion of the rigorous academic courses.

Students who participate in the cohort will also be enrolled in NUR 098, in the ELL Learning Lab where students will work to improve their skills in the following areas:  reading, writing, vocabulary development and study skills, which will assist them in their completion of the academic pre-requisite courses for studies in Healthcare.

Participating in the Healthcare Pathway involves the following:

  • All students will be in a cohort progressing through the pre-requisite courses for the LPN Program  together
  • Students will be able to pre-register for these classes together
  • Some of the pre-requisites will have a healthcare focus that will prepare students for LPN and other healthcare related fields
  • Academic support will be available to all students as they progress through the courses, and there will be a learning lab focused primarily on the needs of non-native English speaker students (NNES).
  • Students who meet all the requirements of the Healthcare Pathway and maintain a 3.0 in each of the prerequisite classes will be granted conditional admittance into the LPN program.

The following classes are pre-requisite classes required to enroll in the LPN Program.  A cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all of the pre-requisite courses is required for entry into the LPN Program.

  • Anatomy & Physiology 213, & 214
  • Math 102 or MAT 107
  • PSY 110 & 206
  • BIO 280
  • ENG 101 – English 101 is required for enrollment in the LPN Program.

(In addition, students enrolled in the Healthcare Pathway are also required to take a Communications class, currently, CMN 135)

Additional courses may be recommended your advisor.
