Overview
Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes are for adults whose reading, writing and math skills are at a 4th grade level or higher and who wish to improve their basic reading, writing and math skills.
- Reading and writing are integrated to give students the foundation for effective communication.
- Reading instruction emphasizes comprehension, vocabulary development, critical thinking, and study skills.
- Writing skills include the review and application of:
- language and grammar rules
- correct usage and spelling
- writing sentences and paragraphs
- Math instruction includes skill development in
- whole numbers
- fractions
- percents
- an introduction to algebra and geometry
Assessment, placement and registration take place the first day of class each quarter. (See the quarterly calendar for exact dates.) Thereafter, please call 206-764-5363 to find out about alternate placement test dates.

Classes are typically available at the West Seattle SSCC campus and our NewHolly site on Beacon Hill.
