South President Named May 11, 2010 SOUTH SEATTLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENT NAMED - Gary Oertli, widely known college leader, selected in national search SEATTLE – The next president at South Seattle Community College will be Gary Oertli, one of the state’s most widely known and respected leaders in higher education. Oertli, who has worked at community colleges and baccalaureate institutions throughout Western Washington, will begin his responsibilities at South before the start of fall quarter. Presidential Finalists Selected April 20, 2010 Search for president at South Seattle Community College narrows to three finalists SEATTLE – Three candidates with extensive higher education experience have been named as finalists in a national search for a new president at South Seattle Community College. A search committee composed of college faculty members, students, and classified and exempt employees, interviewed four semi‐finalist candidates and forwarded the names of the final three candidates to district Chancellor Jill A. Wakefield for interviews. The hiring process also includes campus visits and interviews. The three finalists are ‐ Ivan Gorne, Vice President for Student Services at Bates Technical College in Tacoma, Wash. He also served as vice president for Student Services at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash.; and as associate dean of students, assistant to the president for government relations, and director for student programs at Edmonds Community College in Lynnwood, Wash. His career also includes service as vice president for Student Affairs and as a faculty member at Southern Oregon University and as assistant director of Career Planning and Placement at Central Washington University. He earned a certificate from the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University, a juris doctor from the University of Puget Sound School of Law, and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in education from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash. Shirley Imada Metcalf, Vice President for College Advancement and Extended Learning at Lake Washington Technical College in Kirkland, Wash., where she also had served as executive vice president for Instructional Services. She is the founding and present board member of the National Asian Pacific Islander Council, an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges. Earlier in her career, she had served as dean of Outreach/ director of Continuing Education and Training and dean of Instruction at Hawaii Community College. At the University of Hawaii‐Hilo, she was coordinator for the Hawaii Interactive Television System, administrative intern to the Chancellor and a full professor; she also taught at Kapiolani and Leeward Community Colleges in Hawaii. She earned a doctorate in education at Northern Illinois University, and master’s and bachelor’s of education degrees from the University of Hawaii‐Manoa. Gary L. He was also recent interim president and interim vice president for instruction at South Seattle Community College, former dean at Seattle Central, and director of development for International Affairs and Alumni Relations at the University of Washington. He had also served as president and CEO of Shoreline Community College in Washington, and for 18 years at Edmonds Community College, Lynnwood, Wash., where he was interim president and CEO, executive vice president for instruction and student services, dean of instruction, vocational director, Business Programs director and tenured faculty member. He started his community college career as a part‐time faculty member at North Seattle Community College. Mr. Oertli received an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Schiller International University in London; he is a graduate of the Executive Management program in the graduate school of Business Administration at the University of Washington, where he also earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees. The Seattle Community Colleges educate 53,000 students every year at North Seattle, Seattle Central and South Seattle Community Colleges, and at the Seattle Vocational Institute. College presidents report to the district chancellor and also serve as vice chancellors responsible for coordinating specific district‐wide areas such as instruction and student services. The Seattle Community Colleges Chancellor invites applications for the president of South Seattle Community College. South Seattle Community College serves a multicultural population of 15,000 students each year from an 87-acre, wooded campus in West Seattle, and satellite campuses in the nearby Georgetown and Beacon Hill communities. South is a comprehensive college distinguished by a four-year degree program and innovative offerings such as Wine Technology. Programs include college transfer, professional/technical careers, distance learning, basic & transitional studies, and lifelong learning. Our ongoing pursuit is to combine high student diversity with high student success. In 2008 South received a two-year, $2.4 million federal grant to support student retention and success, with a special focus on Asian-American and Pacific Islander students. South is one of only six recipients in the country, including both two-year and four-year institutions.
