Skype? Not on Campus!!

Free phone calls? Not really!

There are many things that work well on our home computers that do not work well on your work network.

Voice over IP (VOIP) applications like Skype, CallServe, VoIPStunt, etc. turn your PC into a telephone.

They are distributed by for-profit services that leverage the college's network for their income. As soon as you set up Skype or one of the others on our network, they are set to detect available bandwidth. Because Seattle Community Colleges are very fortunate to be a part of the gigaPop network, we have HUGE bandwidth.

That innocent little Skype client on your PC sends back the message: HEY! Lots of bandwidth here!!! And suddenly, millions of calls are re-routed through our network.

This can cause your PC's performance and, indeed, the performance of our entire network, to slow to a crawl.

And you only wanted a simple free phone call!
