Kathie Kwilinski, Executive Director

As head of the Center for International Education, Kathie is passionate about programs and services that help people broaden global perspectives and better communicate across cultures. She works with the team to deliver comprehensive programs and services that support international students studying at South as well as South's faculty, staff and students going abroad. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, Kathie also travels to meet with our global partners, students and families. Kathie enjoys the great food, sites and especially the comradeship that is inherent in international travel. When not traveling, her hobbies include gardening, reading and cooking.


Marketing Team

Gene Baker, Director, International Marketing & Outreach

Gene's primary responsibilities are to recruit international students to South Seattle by working with educational partners throughout the world and to identify key partners for faculty, staff and student exchanges. He travels extensively to other countries to attend educational fairs and visit partners who represent South Seattle. His joy comes from traveling and meeting with students and parents and providing them with educational opportunities offered at South Seattle.
Van Pham, Marketing Associate

Van joined the Center for International Education in late May 2012 as a Marketing Associate. She graduated from Seattle University with a business degree in International Business and Business Economics. She helps manage the program’s online presence through social media channels, newsletters, blog, and website. She also coordinates the International Ambassador Social Media Program in hope to spread awareness of South Seattle Community College and the International Programs Office to the international community. In her leisure time, she finds herself engulfing in a good book, baking sweets, and trying out different types of food and restaurants.
Adam Stewart, Marketing Associate

Adam is the newest member of our marketing department as a marketing associate, specializing in social media and video production. He graduated from Eastern Washington University with a BA degree in Business Marketing and a minor in Visual Communication Design. During college, Adam also participated in collegiate Track and Field athletics for Eastern. He has lived, worked and studied in both Australia and Ireland. He has also done some traveling to Norway, Spain, Italy, New Zealand and Belgium. He enjoys traveling, meeting new people and listening to music.
Tysen Hillquist, Marketing Associate

Tysen Hillquist is an alumnus at South Seattle College with a Business Marketing Degree, he also studied agriculture business in California. His role is assisting in international marketing.He has traveled across many states as well as Mexico, Canada, China and India. He served as student body president and vice president and legislative liaison at South Seattle. With a passion for advocacy, he hopes to influence a legacy of change. Tysen’s father studied and worked in South’s technical division for over 15 years. Due to that, South is much more than just a school to Tysen; he refers to South as “home.” His enjoyments are hiking, gardening, and new adventures.


Lindsey Hoogkamer, Admissions Coordinator

Lindsey is an admissions and online advisor for the office. She works with international students who are interested in attending South, and helps them with the application process. Lindsey is a native Washingtonian who loves the Pacific Northwest. In June 2013, she graduated from Seattle University with her Masters of Education in Student Development Administration. Lindsey is a "cat person" who loves to bake, explore the outdoors, and discover new music.
Keavy Gilbert, Admissions Coordinator

Keavy joined the Center for International Education staff in December 2013 as a part time Admissions Coordinator. In this position, Keavy helps international students interested in SSCC throughout the application process. Keavy is a native Pacific Northwesterner with a great love for the region. She spent a year abroad in Ireland and completed her graduate studies in the UK. Keavy graduated from Boston College with a BA in History and holds a Master’s degree in Irish Studies from Queen’s University Belfast. In her spare time, Keavy loves to read, visit museums, and learn new recipes.


Study Abroad

Megan Sears, Study Abroad Coordinator

Megan Sears is the Study Abroad Coordinator for the Center for International Education department. She believes every student should have the opportunity to study abroad, and is committed to increasing access and diversity within the field of International Education. She advises students about program opportunities, application requirements, and funding options to ensure the best experience possible before students leave, while they are abroad, and once they return. A Seattle native, Megan holds a Master’s degree in International Education with a focus in Social Justice from SIT Graduate Institute, and a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Washington. She has studied abroad in Seville and Barcelona, Spain; Istanbul, Turkey; and spent six months working in a shoe shop in London. She loves talking to students because she remembers very well how exciting (yet terrifying!) living abroad can be. In her free time, Megan enjoys cooking, road trips, discovering new music, and summers in Seattle. 


Front Desk

Rebekah Hunter, Program Coordinator

Rebekah joined the Center for International Education in September 2011 as Program Assistant. She recently graduated with an Associate's degree in Business Information Technology. Originally from Georgia, Rebekah has traveled all over the United States, visiting most of the states. She has traveled internationally to the Bahamas and to Canada, but would like to do more international travel when she can. Rebekah greets each student as they enter the office and offers them support, answers questions, and schedules appointments with the appropriate advisor. She also keeps the many budgets organized and documented and works closely with the business office to resolve all issues that may occur. In her free time she enjoys gardening, canning, cooking, interior design/architecture, beach bumming, travel, soccer, and spending time with her three children.

Mayuli Grajales, Office Assistant

Mayuli was born in Mexico City and moved to Seattle when she was 14 years old. She is the newest addition to the Center for International Education. She serves students at the front desk, helps navigate students to their advisors, scheduling appointments, and answers any questions students may have. She is also a student here at SSC and planning to finish her AA degree at the end of fall quarter. She plans to transfer to the University of Washington at the beginning of next year, majoring in Communications, and minor in Law, Society and Justice, or International Studies. Her biggest passions in life are traveling, and learning about different cultures. She hopes someday she can travel around the world and learn Portuguese.



Tess Matson, Activities and Events Coordinator

Tess works at the front desk as one of the office assistants, greeting students, helping to answer any questions students may have, and scheduling appointments.  She recently graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology with a Minor in Spanish.  She has done a couple study abroad trips but more recently studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain for a semester in 2012. She has traveled to 15 countries and hopes to keep adding to her list. In her spare time she loves cooking, hiking, and traveling.




Catherine Creason, Program Manager/International Student Advisor

Catherine is an International Education Advisor who specializes in advising F-1 students on immigration issues: maintaining F-1 status, on-campus employment, CPT, OPT, and travel. She is responsible for maintaining and reporting data to SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) and coordinates the short term and contract programs for South. Catherine graduated from the University of North Texas with a Bachelor's of Arts in International Studies and two minors in History and Italian. She has traveled to over 13 countries and attended school in Italy in 2007. She enjoys cooking, film, hiking and record collecting.
Ana Korsmo, International Student Advisor

Ana has been working at South Seattle College since 2008. She is a student advisor and coordinator for the Intensive English Program. Students meet with Ana when they are ready to discuss their placement or class selection within the IEP. She is also happy to meet with students to discuss methods for academic success. Ana holds degrees from South Seattle Community College as well as from Pacific Lutheran University. She enjoys listening to local music, crafting jewelry and stationery, and traveling as much as she is able.
