Study English - The Intensive English Program (ESL)

Students who do not have strong English language skills can start their training in the Intensive English Program (IEP) at South Seattle. Enhance your reading, writing, listening, speaking, and everyday English conversation skills. With introductory, intermediate and advanced levels, small class sizes, and select college classes, our students are ready for American college or entry into the business world.


The Intensive English Program (IEP)

Enhance your everyday English in our Intensive English Program (IEP). This program is designed to prepare international students for entry into American college or university. **All college class options are for college credit and can be applied to a college/university degree.

How does the IEP compare to other English programs?
The IEP combines listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with college level courses, creating direct access into college level courses. When you graduate from South Seattle's IEP program, you will have college level credit completed and ready to be applied to your college degree! South Seattle’s IEP is truly a student’s gateway to college or university.

Admission to the IEP
Anyone who wants to learn English is welcome! No TOEFL or High School GPA minimum is required. Students are placed into the appropriate level based on the results of South Seattle’s placement test.

I want to study English. Do you have an English Program?
Yes, South Seattle Community College (SSCC) has an Intensive English Program (IEP) designed for students who will continue their studies in the college. The IEP program includes studies in all skill areas such as grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing. The Introductory, Intermediate and Advance Course Levels promise you the quickest way to reach your English goals.

How long will I have to study English?
To help you plan your length of stay in the USA, students can plan on the following:
  • Introductory Level - Probably one or two quarters of study
  • Intermediate Level - Probably one or two quarters of study
  • Advanced Level - Probably one quarter of study

How many levels are there?
The Intensive English Program offers five levels of study.

How do you choose my level?
You will take a placement test before classes start. This test has reading, listening, and writing sections. After your test results are given to the International Programs office, you will have an advising appointment to determine what classes you take and in what level you begin. You will be placed in the appropriate level according to the results of this test.

TOEFL scores are used for admission only, NOT for placement.

Can I take College level classes while I study English?
Yes! Students in Intermediate and Advanced Levels generally take one college classe each quarter.

Will I be able to begin SSCC automatically when I finish the English program?
Yes! Students who complete the Intensive English Program’s Advanced level begin college at SSCC immediately and without retesting!

Can I work while I study English?
According to U.S. Immigration rules, you can work up to 16 hours per week on campus.

Graduates of the IEP are admitted to South Seattle Community Colleges University Transfer Technical Programs. Ask about Conditional Admission!
