"Gifts from the Earth" Sponsorship Packet

Gifts from the Earth is an annual event that recognizes South Seattle Community College’s Culinary Arts, Wine Studies and four-year Hospitality programs, as well as our partnership with the leaders in these industries. Not only does sponsoring Gifts from the Earth give you the opportunity to prominently position your organization as a leader in the community and promote your business to an influential audience of more than 330 current and future opinion leaders, but is gives you the opportunity to help support the valuable resources the South Seattle Community College Foundation provides for students in these areas and other relevant programs.

Why "Gifts from the Earth"

The proceeds from Gifts from the Earth benefit students and programs at South in the areas of scholarships, program equipment, and tutoring.  By becoming a sponsor of Gifts from the Earth you will help us support students like Culinary Arts student Candis Outson.

Candis didn’t take the typical path to college. As a young mother fresh out of high school she didn’t think college was an option, so she went straight into the world of work and spent the next thirteen years building her career. Then, two years ago, she lost her full time, family-supporting job. Feeling truly lost, with no idea where to go or what to do next, she took a little time to pick herself up and ask herself, “What am I passionate about?”

It turns out that what ignited a fire in Candis’ heart was bringing people together around a special meal. She decided to look into culinary school for her new path.

She had heard about South’s culinary program, but decided to check out some of the ‘other’ schools first. They were okay, but something was missing – none of them felt like the right place for her. Finally, she came to a Saturday open house at South, and found what those other schools were missing.

Candis enrolled for her first quarter in Winter 2013. Since then, she has been on the Dean’s List, achieved a 3.8 GPA, participated in competition classes and spearheaded a new campus organization, the Culinary Council. “Since I have been at South a whole new world has opened up for me,” Candis says, “and I’m doing things I never thought I would.”

Over the past three quarters there have been times when Candis didn’t think she’d be able to continue her education. She had drained her savings during her period of  unemployment and no matter how many weekend shifts she picked up, she couldn’t make enough to make ends meet and go to school. If it weren’t for the three-quarter Foundation scholarship she received in the Fall2014, she would not be cooking up a storm in South’s Culinary Arts program today.

Candis puts it best when she says, “I have come so far in my journey, and now I am on the path to success and following my dreams.”

Candis is just one of hundreds of students that the South Seattle Community College Foundation helps each year through scholarships and other valuable resources. You can help students like Candis by becoming a Gifts from the Earth sponsor.
