Student Progress Procedures

Introduction
The Student Progress procedures affect all students enrolled in certificate or degree programs and students taking prerequisite college courses numbered 100 and above.

Students who are enrolled in special enrollment programs such as High School Completion, Running Start, certain vocational programs (Aviation, Culinary, Apprenticeship), international students, veterans, and students receiving financial aid may have different and/or additional academic standard requirements and appeal processes to those listed below. Students in these programs should contact their program advisor for information regarding these requirements.

Minimum Grade Point Average
  • First Warning - Low Scholarship
    Students whose cumulative GPA drops below 2.0 for the first time are on "First Warning: Academic Alert".
    Students are sent a letter that encourages them to schedule an appointment with a counselor or advisor and to contact the various campus support services and resources that may be of assistance. The letter also explains the consequences of not achieving satisfactory academic performance.
  • Second Warning - Academic Probation
    Students whose cumulative GPA is below 2.0 for two consecutive quarters or who do not achieve a minimum 2.0 quarterly GPA the second quarter are placed on "Second Warning".
    Students are sent a letter that requires them to schedule an appointment with a counselor or advisor and to contact the various campus support services and resources that may be of assistance. The letter explains the consequences of not achieving satisfactory academic performance.

    A hold is placed on their registration requiring them to meet with a counselor prior to registration.
  • Third Warning - Suspension/Extension/Dismissal
    Students whose cumulative GPA is below 2.0 for a third consecutive quarter or who did not receive at least a 2.0 the third quarter are suspended for one year.
    Students are required to meet with a Dean prior to enrolling.

    Students are notified of dismissal in a letter and have the option of requesting a meeting with the Academic Standards Committee to appeal the decision and petition for readmission.

Credits Attempted/ Credits Earned
  • First Warning
    Students who have not successfully completed at least 75 percent of a given quarter's credits or clock hours attempted when they reach a minimum of 30 attempted credits or equivalent clock hours, are placed on "First Warning". Students are sent a letter that encourages them to schedule an appointment with a counselor or advisor and to contact the various campus support services and resources that may be of assistance. The letter also explains the consequences of not achieving satisfactory academic performance.
  • Second Warning
    Students who have not successfully completed at least 75 percent of a given quarter's credits or clock hours attempted in a second occurrence without quarterly improvement are placed on "Second Warning". Professional judgment will be applied to determine what constitutes quarterly improvement.

    Students are sent a letter that requires them to schedule an appointment with a counselor or advisor and to contact the various campus support services and resources that may be of assistance. The letter also explains the consequences of not achieving satisfactory academic performance.
  • Third Warning
    Students who have not successfully completed at least 75 percent of a given quarter's credits or clock hours attempted in a third occurrence without quarterly improvement are suspended for one quarter. Professional judgment will be applied to determine what constitutes quarterly improvement.

    Students who receive an extension letter are required to meet with an Academic Dean prior to enrolling. Students who are notified of suspension are provided with the option of requesting a meeting with the Academic Standards Committee to petition for readmission.

Degree/Certificate Completion
  • Initial Notification
    Students who complete 85 percent of the number of credits/clock hours required for their degree or certificate receive a notice regarding their progress towards the completion of their degree or certificate program. The notice encourages students to meet with an advisor to develop an educational plan for completion and informs them of the district's degree/certificate completion policy.
  • First Warning - Contract for completion
    Students who complete 125% of the credits/clock hours required for their degree/certificate without receiving the degree/certificate receive a certified letter notifying them that a hold has been placed on their registration and transcript pending a meeting with a college advisor. The hold is released after an educational plan and contract for completion have been developed and signed by both the student and the advisor. The letter includes information on the district's policy on degree and certificate completion, including the tuition surcharge amount that will be applied to credits over the 150 percent of the credits/clock hours needed to complete their program.
  • Second Warning - Tuition Surcharge
    Students who complete more than 150% of the credits/clock hours required to complete their program are charged a surcharge on the tuition for all credits taken above the 150 percent level for their degree/certificate.
