What does the scholarship pay for?
The scholarship covers tuition for one year (fall, winter, and spring quarters). The 13th Year Scholarship is a "last dollar scholarship," meaning that any eligible financial aid will be applied first, and then the 13th Year Scholarship will cover any remaining unpaid tuition. The scholarship only covers the first three quarters (fall, winter, and spring) attended at South Seattle Community College and cannot be dispersed or "saved" for summer quarter or future quarters at South. If you do not attend South during any of the three quarters, the scholarship cannot be recovered.
Note that the scholarship does not cover additional fees or textbooks. You can see current tuition and fee rates listed at http://www.southseattle.edu/services/tuition.htm. Note that these expenses may be covered by financial aid or other resources available at SSCC.
Will the scholarship only cover certain programs at SSCC?
The scholarship will cover credit-bearing programs at South Seattle Community College such as college transfer, technical/professional programs, as well as non-credit ESL ABE. As long as you are enrolled as a full-time student between 12 and 15 credits each quarter and maintain satisfactory academic progress you may receive the scholarship. The scholarship will not cover apprenticeship programs.
Can Running Start students apply for the Scholarship?
If you are a student that is participating in running Start, you may still apply for the 13th Year Scholarship and can receive it until you earn your Associate's Degree.
Running Start students must complete all scholarship requirements including taking the COMPASS Placement test if you tested over 2 years ago or if you did not test into college-level English or Math courses. Please see Program Coordinator for more details.
What is the COMPASS Placement Test?
The COMPASS is a computer-based test that is used to place you in the appropriate level courses based on your reading, writing, and math skills. You must take this test in order to attend South Seattle Community College (similar to taking the SAT or ACT to attend universities). To receive the 13th Year Scholarship, you must complete the test by the deadline (to be announced).
To receive the scholarship you must attend a COMPASS Prep workshop before you take the COMPASS test. Free waivers for the COMPASS test are available after you attend the COMPASS Prep workshop. If you do not place into college-level courses your first time testing, you must enroll in a series of COMPASS Improvement Workshops and retake the COMPASS after you complete these workshops.
You are saving time and money by preparing for the COMPASS test. If you score into college-level courses, you will not have to take remedial courses which may take multiple quarters to complete before reaching college-level courses and you will save that much more in tuition costs. For more information regarding the COMPASS Test and study resources, please see the SSCC Student Assessment Office's website
