 TRiO Programs
Our nation has asserted a commitment to providing educational opportunity for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance.

In support of this commitment, Congress established a series of programs to help low-income Americans enter college, graduate and move on to participate more fully in America's economic and social life. These Programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRiO Programs (initially just three programs). While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRiO programs help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education. (Learn more about TRiO programs http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ope/trio/index.html.)

South's three highly successful TRiO programs have been providing college access and retention services on our campus for 12 years ~~ TRiO Talent Search ~~ Student Success Services ~~ Upward Bound.

Some evidence of their current successes:
During the 2004-2005 academic year, between Upward Bound and TRiO Talent Search programs, over 473 families in our community are being served.

In 2004, Upward Bound graduates had a 4-year college going rate of 96% compared to 63% 4-year college going rate on average for the high schools served.

In 2004, at Tyee High School, only 9% of all their graduates went on to enroll in 4 year university programs while 100% of the TRiO participants who graduated from Tyee went on to enroll in higher education.

South's TRiO programs serve students from grades 6 through 12. In 2004, well over 90% of program participants were successfully promoted to the next grade level. 30% of non-TRiO middle and high school students drop out of local schools before graduation.

A concern of many post secondary educators is that students aren't prepared for the rigors of a college education. In the fall 2004 quarter of their respective colleges/universities, TRiO graduates maintained on average over a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
