South Seattle Community College and the college’s Foundation launched the 13th Year Promise Scholarship in 2007. Based on data from the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges that highlights the enormous difference that one year of college makes in students’ life success, this innovative program was developed to guarantee that all Cleveland High School students have the opportunity to attend college tuition-free for one year. To date, 48 Cleveland graduates have attended South Seattle Community College with the scholarship.
In 2010, the program expanded to Chief Sealth International High School. This was made possible by generous donations from the Boeing Company, College Spark Foundation, the entire South Seattle Community College Foundation Board of Directors, and other private donors. There were a total of 52 Chief Sealth graduates who attended South in fall 2011 with the scholarship.
The program was primarily designed to increase access to higher education for underserved students as well as expose high school students to a college environment early on to prepare them to succeed in college. Students in the program agree that the 13th Year Promise Bridge Orientation and Readiness Academy has prepared them to be successful students at South.
